Together, we’re creating a legacy that goes beyond business - one that’s changing the world for the better.
The Senior UX Designer at Armstrong designs the customer experience of our next-generation product and solution selection tool, which lets sellers, partners, and customers select, configure, and quote Armstrong products, systems, and full-portfolio solutions. Reporting to the Global Lead, CPQ, PLM and BoM Management and working within the UX direction set by the Lead UX Designer, you will research, design, and test key parts of the user journey, from sign-in through selection, configuration, and quotation to order submission. Working closely with the product manager, business analysts, developers, and quality assurance engineers, you will turn user needs into clear, simple designs that the team can build and ship.
This position is based at our SAA office in Toronto, Canada with possible travel to our global operations in the USA, UK, Continental Europe, India, and China.
In addition to annual initiatives, the key accountabilities of this position are:
- Design assigned parts of the user journey, such as product and system selection, configuration, quote building, and order submission, from early concepts to detailed, build-ready designs.
- Plan and run user research with sellers, partners, customers, and customer service and order-entry teams, including interviews, observation, and usability tests, and share clear findings.
- Design guided selection and configuration flows that hide product and rules complexity from the user and make it easy to build complete systems and solutions.
- Design for complex work, including large selections, many quote lines, and repeated revisions, so users never lose work and always know the status of a quote or order.
- Write clear, human-readable error, validation, and status messages, and design how pricing, availability, and lead-time information is shown so users can trust it.
- Build prototypes to test ideas with users early, and refine designs based on what you learn.
- Apply and contribute to the design system, including components, patterns, and accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.2 AA).
- Work in the team's Agile cadence, turning designs into user stories and acceptance criteria with business analysts, supporting developers during the build, and reviewing the result against the design.
- Run usability testing before and after release, and track task completion, error rates, and user feedback for your areas.
Role Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction or Industrial Design, Cognitive Psychology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., Nielsen Norman Group UX Certification or accessibility certification) are an asset.
Experience
- Minimum five years of experience in UX or product design for complex web applications.
- Experience designing B2B transactional tools such as configure-price-quote (CPQ), product configurators, e-commerce, or ERP/CRM front ends is strongly preferred.
- Experience designing for several user groups with different roles and needs.
- Experience in HVAC, building systems, or industrial equipment is an asset.
Skills
- Strong interaction design and information architecture skills for data-dense, multi-step workflows, with a portfolio showing complex problems made simple.
- Hands-on experience with user research and usability testing methods.
- Advanced skills in design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma) and experience working with a design system.
- Working knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.2) and of how web front ends are built, enough to work effectively with developers.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain design decisions to team members and stakeholders clearly and concisely.
Personality
- Customer-focused, with a genuine interest in how sellers and customers really work.
- Detail-oriented and committed to quality, from first sketch to shipped product.
- Collaborative and open to feedback, and comfortable working closely with developers and analysts.
- Ability to communicate in an open and authentic manner in all situations.
