The Opportunity
Our client is an established contract manufacturer producing consumer and household products for leading North American brands and retailers. They are seeking an experienced Cost Accountant who enjoys hands-on product costing, works comfortably with manufacturing data and has the judgment to recognize when a number does not make sense.
This is a practical, high-impact position in Finance with close daily interaction with Sales, Purchasing and Operations. Roughly 50% of the role involves preparing customer quotations; the balance is focused on maintaining standards, cost accounting and explaining variances. It will suit someone who values ownership, accuracy and a stable long-term role.
Responsibilities
- Prepare timely, accurate customer cost sheets and quotations using bills of materials, material and packaging costs, direct labour and manufacturing overhead.
- Develop and update standard product costs, including annual standards and quarterly reviews; maintain reliable data in the ERP system.
- Analyze quoted versus standard versus actual costs, margins, purchase price variances (PPV) and production/costing variances.
- Review costing outputs for reasonableness, identify errors or unexpected cost drivers and investigate discrepancies before issuing quotes.
- Work directly with Sales, Purchasing and manufacturing colleagues to confirm assumptions, resolve issues and support pricing decisions.
- Support inventory revaluations, month-end reconciliations and journal entries, management reporting, and audit-related costing requirements.
- Help improve costing accuracy, consistency and the quality of information used for commercial decisions.
Qualifications
- At least 3 years of meaningful cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally with product costing and a high volume of quotes or cost builds.
- Sound knowledge of bills of materials, labour and overhead standards, standard costing, PPV, inventory accounting and margin analysis.
- Strong Excel skills and experience working with an ERP system; MAGIC experience is an asset.
- Ability to validate your own work, challenge unusual costs and communicate findings clearly across departments.
- An accounting or finance education; CPA qualification is helpful but not required.
